So here it is our 2017 update of the Wales100. This list represent our personal choice of the bands and singers from or working in Wales. I’m sure there are people who you feel we have missed and it is harder each year to limit this to just 100 acts. Maybe next year we should have the Wales500! The acts have been listed alphabetically. We hope that promoters, journalists, broadcasters and those that love original and exciting music will find the Wales100 a useful resource. We will be updating the Wales100 on an annual basis so let us know if you think there is a singer or band that we should consider including next year (email@example.com )
Accu features Angharad Van Rijswijk former member of Trwbador. Her appearances at ‘From Now On’ & SWN have helped position her as one of the rising stars of Cardiff’s alt art/music scene.

Songs continue to be the life blood of the music industry and if there we were to single out one person as having huge potential as a ‘song writer for the future’ it would be Lily Beau. Currently studying in London, she has a growing repertoire of strong original material and is already an assured and confident performer. Her song ‘Tonight’ was chosen by The Iris Prize Festival as their featured song for the festival in 2015.

Bright Light Bright Light
Bright Light Bright Light is the moniker adopted by former pop folkie Rod Thomas. Since then he has had something of a ‘road to Damascus’ transformation moving into full blown electro pop. The band’s debut single “Love Part ll” caused quite a stir and after some hefty delays their debut album ‘Make Me Believe in Hope’ was released in 2012 and short listed for the Welsh Music Prize. In 2014 BLBL teamed up with Elton John who sang a duet on the sophomore album “Life is Easy” and subsequently invited the band to support him on numerous European and American dates . BLBL’s most recent album ‘Choreography’ was released to favourable reviews in 2016 and he continues to spend his time between New York and London.

Bryde is probably better known to most people as Sarah Howells form Paper Aeroplanes. She started using the moniker Bryde in 2015 and the music she has released so far is much darker and atmospheric than her previous work. She describes Bryde as being ‘a girl & an electric guitar singing fierce & fragile songs. Influenced by the likes of Scout Nibblet, PJ Harvey, Ben Howard & Sharon Van Etten.” She has released 2 Eps in 2016 and is hotly tipped for the year ahead.

Cate le Bon
For lazy journalists she has become ‘the Welsh Nico’ a tag she probably already regrets. Nevertheless she is one of Wales’ more enigmatic female singers and came to prominence as part of Gruff Rhys’ Neon Neon project. Her own solo debut album “Me Oh My” released in 2009 received national coverage and her subsequent albums ”Cyrk” and “Mug Museum” & ‘Crab Day ‘ were short listed for the Welsh Music Prize. Reports in 2016 suggested she would be taking time out form music to concentrate on learning the art of furniture making.

Cakehole Presley/Chris Ridgeway
Cakehole Presley includes some of the unsung heroes of the Cardiff music scene with members having played in such legendary bands as the Howlin’ Sleepers and Doofer. Their enigmatically entitled debut album ‘Look After Your Chihuahua’ was released in 2011 and an EP Trinkets in 2012. After a 2 year absence the band announced their come back in 2014. If there was an award for ‘the greatest living Welsh song writer’ the band’s singer and chief song writer Chris Ridgeway would surely be a contender. The band recorded their 2nd album “In the used to be” which was released in 2016 to favourable reviews including a 5 star review in R2 Magazine. Tragically Mark Humphries from the band died in 2015. The band will reportedly be carrying on as ‘Cakehole’ in the future.

When SWN promoted a show with Charlotte Church a few years ago we were slightly cynical to say the least. However, Charlotte has come a long way since singing opera for the Pope or releasing “Crazy Chick”. Her recent series of EP’s made with her partner Jonathan Powell are highly sophisticated and contain some moments of pure beauty. In recent years Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon has become a festival favourite with it’s eclectic collection of covers and originals.

Music history is littered with artists who have had radical shifts in style before finding their true niche. Bob Dylan went electric, Rod Thomas went electro to transform into Bright Light Bright Light and in 2015 Jamie Willetts ditched his 6 string acoustic to morph into Hvnter. It’s always been a blessing and a bit of a curse to have famous parents when it comes to music. However, with the success of Rufus Wainwright, Jacob Dylan etc this seems to be lifting. Jessica is a talented song writer who released her debut ‘I Am Not’ in 2010. She has an eclectic mix of styles ranging from acoustic folk to out and out pop and seems to have inherited the song writing gift of her mother, Mary Hopkin and the studio wizardry of her father, Tony Visconti. For the past few years Jessica has been touring with Holy Holy playing the music of David Bowie. Her second album is due for release in 2017.
