Festive singles from Wales in 2020

If like us you are mightily sick of hearing the same old Christmas tunes being pumped out of shops and bars every year from 1st November then you might enjoy some of these brand new festive Welsh tunes.

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard – “Christmas is Coming (We All Know the Score)”

Buzzardx3 have studied their Christmas classics – see how many musical references you can spot in this ‘we hate Christmas, but we’ll probably go along with it grudgingly anyway’ tune. Ideal for all you Christmas humbugs to play full blast on that fabulous new record deck your parents bought you for Christmas.

Al Lewis – “Mi Gredaf I (I Believe)

Christmas is a special time for both Al Lewis and Newsoundwales as we enjoy putting together the Al Lewis & Friends Christmas shows at St John’s Church in Canton. That can’t happen this year but Al has just released a new festive single complete with a sleigh bell introduction; it’s a nascent Christmas classic!

MADI – “Last Christmas

You can’t beat this classic Wham! track every year; a compulsory track at all Christmas parties. MADI has given it a refreshing 21st century update and demonstrates why she is fast becoming THE Welsh electro pop diva. Listen to more MADI at the following links:

Evans McRae – “Merry Christmas My Darling (Drink Up)”

Christmas is renowned for producing classic duets such as Kirsty & Shane, David & Bing. Now Tom McRae and Wales’ own Lowri Evans have combined forces to record this superb heartfelt ballad. It’s the sort of festive song we would all be getting maudlin to late at night in our favourite Welsh pub if only we were allowed to drink alcohol this year.

Pedair – “Carol Nadolig Hedd Wyn

Pedair consist of Sian James, Gwyneth Glyn, Meinir Gwilym a Gwenan Gibbard so they are something of a Welsh folk super group. Carol Nadolig Hedd Wyn is a beautiful traditional Welsh folk carol.

Bryony Sier – ” The World Starts Singing”

Bryony is a favourite of ours here at Newsoundwales and this track produced by Charlie Francis is a gorgeous traditional style festive ballad that will get you swaying along with Grandma albeit outside in the back garden, freezing cold, 2 metres apart, wearing a full PPE and trying not to cough.

Jodie Marie – “(I Don’t Wanna Be Alone) This Christmas

This track from one of Wales’ finest independent female artists is a joyful homage to all those 60s girl groups such as the Ronettes and the Shirelles. Written by Jodie it was recorded at StudiOwz recording studio, Pembrokeshire and co-produced by Jody and Owain Fleetwood Jenkins.

Rebecca Hurn – “Something About Christmas

Written and performed by Rebecca Hurn this sublime track describes the emotional reminiscing of a past lover during the holiday season. Produced by Lee House (XY&O, John Adams) it’s an emotional ballad that wouldn’t sound out of place on any Radio 2 playlist in December.

Emma Mae – “’Tis the Season”

Christmas always needs a bit of cynicism and expletives to upset your uptight Uncle. Emma Mae is a huge talent and is an artist we think you will be hearing a lot more from in 2021.

The Real Plastic Christmas Trees – “I Promise That I Won’t fuck Christmas Up”

We’ve all done it at some stage haven’t we? Forgotten to defrost the turkey, pissed by midday, asleep by 2pm. Paul Barsi & Antony Bunko from Merthyr have put together this charming festive song. I’m sure I recognise a few faces in this video…
