Climbing Trees – Hebron

Climbing Trees have managed to produce a lovingly crafted debut album with superb arrangements, exquisite musicianship and melodies that will reveal themselves over time and stay with you for the long haul. Listening to songs such as “Burning Candle” with its glorious gospel tinged harmonies and guitar and keyboard parts that Robbie Robertson and Al Kooper would be proud of you could be forgiven for thinking this was a band from Los Angeles rather than Pontypridd. Stand out tracks include “Ahab” which has a stunning wordless vocal and “River Home” with its persistent refrain ‘my home is the river…’ and a rolling piano that propels the melody forward.  Elsewhere songs such as “Happen” are reminiscent of the Storys and with that band sadly no more Climbing Trees could well turn out to be their natural successors. With this year’s Welsh Music Prize having just been announced “Hebron” is an early contender for next year’s short list.
